Who we are

Alketo is made by HOREC GROUP s.r.o., a company registered in Slovakia.

Why we built it

The idea of building Alketo had been in my head for a long time.

The main reason was the language barrier — when travelling, and when talking to foreigners around me. Not everyone can learn another language, or gets the chance to, and those who can usually manage only a few.

So I tried to build a tool that would let people from different corners of the world understand each other without trouble. Something that helps not only when travelling, at an office counter or in a difficult moment in life, but that also brings people together and makes friendships across borders.

That is where the Room came from: people who speak different languages can write to each other there, and still feel they are talking to a friend from the next street, in their own language.

While building Alketo I took care that it would give people as much privacy as possible — something quite fragile these days.

I hope Alketo finds users who are glad to have it, and that it brings them joy from travelling and from connecting with people all over the world.

How we work

Alketo is a small operation, not a large company. That shapes what the app is: there is no account system to maintain, no advertising business to feed, and no reason to collect anything about you. What you translate is yours.

We would rather say plainly what the app cannot do than promise more than it delivers. The app's own buttons and menus are available in 56 languages, and those were not checked by a native speaker of each one — so if a label reads oddly in yours, write to us and we will fix it.
